Last Friday we hiked up to Timpanogos Cave. It was 1.5 miles up over 1000 feet in elevation. It was really cool. The trail was right on the edge of the cliff and sometimes there wasn’t even a railing. There were a few blasted short tunnels through the rock to make room for the trail on the way up. There were a whole bunch of switchbacks. It felt like they just kept going on forever.
When we got to the cave I was surprised how cold it was in there. Our guide said it was 45 degrees. There were really cool rocks. Some were called Flow Stones, some were called Popcorn, and others were called Columns where stalactites and stalagmites meet.
Here is a picture where this stalactite and stalagmite are almost a column but it will still take many decades before it’s a column. Most of these formations are over 400,000 years old.
Behind us in this picture there are flow stones and popcorn formations.
This is a huge stalactite called The Heart of Timpanogos. People have been doing tours in this part of the cave for 85 years. We saw photos of people hiking the trail in 1922, exactly 100 years ago!
