Bishop Castle and Royal Gorge

Ever since some friends told us about Bishop Castle I have wanted to go and see it in person. It was a bit of a drive to get there but it was totally worth it. It is a building that was started in 1969 and construction continues today, advertised as the country’s biggest one-man castle. I believe the man who built it is still alive. He built it mostly just with his hands, a truck, and a pulley system during weekends and summer breaks. He never lived in the castle but it is a sight to behold. He gathered the rocks from the surrounding land and did all the masonry work himself as well. Since it is a working construction site and not exactly built to code they can’t insure it, which means they can’t charge money to visit. So we took a friend from church and spent the day exploring this super unique place.

That tower is 160 feet tall and we climbed to the top!

The Bridge to Nowhere just stops - yikes!

There are lots of rickety spiral staircases.

Walking on these balconies took some getting used to. It felt like we might fall through at any moment.

This room was beautiful.

It’s hard to get an idea of scale.

This is the tippity top of the tower.
The whole thing sways with the breeze and there isn’t anything to hang onto,
AND there are no walls or windows!

We all felt like this at the top. Townes was super brave.

We stopped at a park in Royal Gorge, CO on our way home. Margot befriended this dinosaur.

Pretty Bird with the Arkansas River.

The Royal Gorge was super cool! We could see the zip line and trams going over it from our free vantage point. (There was no way we were going to pay $30 each to walk across the bridge.)

Oregon!

A few hours after seeing Crater Lake we finally made it to our Airbnb outside of Portland. The kids loved it from the first moment we walked...
